One of the very biggest influences in my life outside my family was Walter Payton.
Growing up in Chicago, I was (and am) a huge Bears fan! Walter Payton’s work ethic, tenacity and desire to be the best were something I greatly admired and how I try to approach my life. What more of a tribute could I offer than to name one of my best dogs “Payton”?
In what seems to be an ever-growing family, I co-own Payton with Chris and Jean
Erath of Lakeville, Minnesota. Payton’s father is CH. Tanglewood’s Khochise (Chief), and his mother is our girl, CH. Ruster’s
Mysterious Image (Reeba). As a young dog, Payton had more energy than any dog
I have seen to date. Terrorizing his mother and father by chasing them endlessly
around our farm until either he got tired, or they got mad and put him in his
The second part of his growing up comes from his slightly older brothers and
sisters in Minnesota. After growing up with a bossy older sister, Ozzy was excited
to have a younger “sibling” he could pick on (I mean look after). Ozzy and Payton were immediate best friends and at times they would even include Lovey and their Irish “brother”,
Sullivan in their pranks.
In the show ring, Payton was a show-stopper, earning a 4 point Major his very first time in the ring. Later that year at the 2006 Nationals, Payton won the National and Midwest Sweepstakes.
One of the most exciting aspects of showing dogs is being selected Best In Show. On December 3rd 2006, I was showing Payton as a class dog trying to earn his AKC Championship, when he was selected Best In Show from the classes- an amazing feat in the dog world! Just over a month later Payton won a Giant Schnauzer Specialty making him one of just a handful of Best In Show, Best In Specialty Show winning dogs in the history of our breed.
We’re excited about his future and look forward to Payton spending time with
his family in Minnesota and here at Tanglewood, as we all love him very much.
